What's Killing Jamestown? |
PuNnett Squares & Genetic Variability |
This interdisciplinary lesson addresses 7th grade Math, ELA and Social Studies standards. A team of SC teachers developed this lesson during the summer of 2018 and taught the learning segment in December. In it, students analyze primary sources to determine possible causes of death of Jamestown colonists, create a simulation to predict the probability of colonists' mortality in Jamestown, identify and compare the theoretical vs. experimental probabilities of each cause of death.

To create this learning segment, a North Carolina science teacher developed an interactive lesson that focused on a key concept in biology while also incorporating major themes in computational thinking. Students will create a flowchart to explain the step by step process of using a punnett square to solve a genetics problem. They will use blocks of pre-written code to create and solve a punnett square and can use these as a model to create their own.
